Genoa - Ships loaded with cocaine scheduled to unload at the port of Genoa, (avoiding it at the last minute, in this case), place the city once again at the crossroads of global cocaine trafficking. According to investigators, an unknown informant got a message to the ship - the Carolina Star, a Lebanese freighter which in the past had already been involved in an investigation leading to the arrest of dock workers employed by the ‘Ndrangheta - convincing the crew to change the ship’s route, perhaps in order to avoid a police seizure, and to continue on towards Marseille.
These are the elements of a global thriller involving, for the second time over the last month, a ship carrying hundreds of kilos of drugs. The cocaine was found by the French gendarmerie in a false bottom in the keel. To make this case even more mysterious, just eight days ago, another 200 kilos were discovered on board the same vessel in Livorno. In mid-February the Dimitris C., ship flying the Liberian flag, was detained in Genoa and 200 kilos of cocaine were discovered by Genoese police squads.
