Genoa - Costa Cruises aims to build its own cruise terminal in the port of Genoa, and is willing to collaborate with architect Renzo Piano, who is designing the city’s new waterfront. Michael Thamm, CEO of Costa Cruises, announced it in an interview with the Il Secolo XIX newspaper.
“It’s right to pursue a great opportunity for the region. Genoa is an attractive city, which after the construction of the new bridge will be able to express its potential even more. Costa Cruises, here, generated an economic impact of 280 million euros and more than 1,800 jobs last year. We have very ambitious programs, with the entry of 7 new ships into the fleet by 2023: it’s natural to look for new spaces and expand the offer available to passengers. Genoa has the support of a great architect like Renzo Piano, who 25 years ago has already changed the face of the waterfront with the Porto Antico project and will continue to do so in the coming years. His vision must be completed, the city will benefit greatly. We are willing to dialogue with him, to have a role in his project”.

Speaking of green projects, Thamm said: “We strongly believe in decarbonisation, and we want to be protagonists: we live it as a possibility of growth. We have dedicated hundreds of millions to the study of new technologies, we have invested in a small Italian company, Ecospray (which produces scrubbers, ed) making it the second player in the world. And we are proud to have brought the first Lng-powered ship, Aida Nova, to the Mediterranean: most of our ships under construction are prepared for liquefied natural gas propulsion. The goal is zero emissions. Also for this reason we are focusing a lot on batteries, they are studying bigger and bigger models: they are the only tool able to make a ship enter the ports in a “total clean” way”.
