Trieste - Fincantieri, one of the largest shipbuilding groups in the world, is demonstrating its strong commitment to the offshore market by launching Proxima, a revolutionary drillship able to operate not only in previously unfeasible locations but also more efficiently. Proxima has been developed by Fincantieri integrating the innovative drilling tower designed by Castor Drilling Solution which is a specialized company participated by the Fincantieri Group. The tower, which comes from offshore wind turbine industry, consisting of two telescopic cylindrical parts. This solution is empowered by a smart deck layout which implies the largest open drillfloor on the market. Following on from project Overdrill, launched last year in partnership with Aker Solutions, Proxima continues to embody the Fincantieri Offshore philosophy of offering vessels created and designed around the drilling system, maximizing its integration with the hull. Furthermore, Proxima has an advanced drilling system with significantly faster drilling speeds.
The vessel’s innovative design improves ergonomics in the operational areas, letting the crew work more efficiently in safer, more comfortable conditions, while allowing faster transit speed. Compared with other ships in this category, the Fincantieri drillship designs also feature greater variable deck load capacity despite smaller overall dimensions. This represents an opportunity for drilling contractors to enhance their current fleets with a new class of higher performance, more efficient vessels, whose design can also be customized for specific requirements and operational needs. This powerful, customizable vessel not only has a low environmental impact but also lower operating costs and superior drilling performance. It is therefore an attractive proposition for drilling contractors seeking to boost their results not only by drilling more efficiently, but also by drilling wells that previously could not be drilled.
Proxima represents the appropriate answer to an ever changing market which requires to exploit all ultra-deep water opportunities leveraging upon superior drilling performances. The drilling package is designed to meet new requirements regarding water depth and total drilling depth with upgraded capabilities, such as increased well pressure (20k) and maximum hook load (1500 sh.ton). Commenting on the new design Mr. Giuseppe Coronella, EVP of Fincantieri Offshore, said: “We are proud to say that this vessel can help facilitate the business of our customers and make it more profitable. Following on from project Overdrill, this new, innovation-driven design has delivered another Drillship class, ready to serve a challenging and changing market that, in view of future trends, needs to be supported”.
