Cairo Montenotte - They stole tractors in the area between Liguria and Piedmont and exported them to Romania for reselling in Eastern Europe. The gang of agricultural vehicle-jackers were caught thanks to an operation by the carabinieri police of the Cairo Operational Headquarters, with the help of Savona law enforcement agents from Dego, Pontinvrea, Cairo Montenotte and Cherasco, ultimately leading to one arrest and three indictments. Between early June and mid-July, five thefts of tractors had been reported, one of which was thwarted and four carried out successively, in the area surrounding the provinces of Savona, Cuneo and Alessandria. The total losses amounted to 450,000 euro in stolen tractors. The thieves were not content with small agricultural vehicles but specifically targeted tractors in the 70 or 80 thousand euro range each. As reconstructed by the police, the group followed a well thought out plan, loading the stolen tractors on trucks to take them across the Italian border. The stolen tractors have not yet been recovered. However, one individual, G.A., a 31-year-old Romanian man was located by the police in Cherasco and taken into custody. The man, considered one of the perpetrators of the thefts, is under house arrest in Turin. Three of his fellow countrymen have been charged with attempted aggravated theft, and repeated aggravated theft of agricultural vehicles.
