Palermo - An envelope containing a bullet was addressed to the chairman of the Port System Authority of the Western Sicilian Sea, Pasqualino Monti. The head of the port had, the previous day, signed an anti-mafia protocol, together with the prefect of the island’s capital. In a show of solidarity with the authorities the CGIL union of Palermo made calls to “close ranks” and “to react firmly”. At stake are construction projects worth 250 million euro in the port area, which must “not fall prey to the mafia’s appetites.” Also Assoporti, through its president, Zeno D’Agostino, expressed solidarity with his colleague: “These intimidating actions will not achieve their intended purpose. We’ll stand firm and keep working with transparency and full respect of the law.”
