Sicily is betting everything on zero-impact ferries

Genoa - The company Caronte & Tourist will invest about €200 million in the next ten years for the production of new liquefied natural gas powered ferries. The announcement was made in Genoa yesterday by Lorenzo Matacena. The president of the Sicilian group’s short-sea shipping sector added that the hybrid ferry ordered by Caronte & Tourist, which is currently under construction in Turkey, will be delivered by the end of next year. Matacena explained, “The main problem for anyone who operates in Italy is the logistics of refuelling. In fact, there is no certainty in Italy about where and when the first facility for gas refuelling will be operational.”
