Brussels - The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), represents the interests of European ship-owners and helps formulate EU policy on critical maritime transport-related issues to the benefit of shippers and consumers. Patrick Verhoeven is the Secretary General of this association and he welcomes the recent agreement allowing a number of derogations for seafarers which endorsed the European Commission directive proposal presented in 2013.
The European Commission has seeked to improve working conditions for seafarers working on vessels while taking proper account of the specific features of the maritime sector, what is the official position of ECSA?
“ECSA supports measures to improve the working conditions for seafarers. That is why, we have worked actively together with our trade union counterpart, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF). A concrete example is the social partners’ agreement between ECSA and ETF on the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). (...)”.
