Istanbul - Turkey has unveiled ambitious plans to design and build a huge advanced warship, capable of carrying 1,000 personnel. A Turkish company and the government signed an agreement to build the 231-meter-long vessel on the sidelines of the IDEF 2015 defense-sector fair on Thursday in Istanbul.
Turkey’s undersecretary for defense industries, or SSM, and Turkish shipbuilder Sedef Holding signed the deal to build the landing platform dock, or LPD. Mujdat Uludag, a senior official at SSM, said the project is expected to end in 2021.
The cost of the scheme was not disclosed. Turkish companies, such as Aselsan and Havelsan, will produce and install several of the ship’s components including armament, electronics and communications systems.A Spanish company, Navantia, will help in designing the ship. Uludag said that the capabilities of the Turkish Naval Forces will be advanced with this warship, adding that the craft would be able to sail in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas. “If needed, the warship can also sail in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans,” Uludag said.
The multi-purpose warship can transport helicopters, army vehicles, soldiers and equipment and carry at least 1,000 military personnel. It can also be used for humanitarian relief missions. The new craft will be biggest landing dock in the naval forces’ inventory.
