Milan - Gilberto Benetton, one of the co-founders of the Italian clothing retailer Benetton Group, has died, sources with knowledge of the matter said on Monday.
Gilberto Benetton was the family’s voice of the infrastructure group Atlantia, whose unit Autostrade per l’Italia was under fire after the Morandi bridge in Genoa’s highway had collapsed on Aug. 14, sending dozens of cars plunging to the ground and killing 43 people. Autostrade per l’Italia, the company that operated the highway, was blamed for the tragedy.
Aged 77, he was the deputy-head of the Edizione Holding which controls Atlantia. Last month he told Corriere della Sera in an interview that his heart would have forever carried the burden of the bridge’s tragedy.
