Algeciras - Throughput of goods at the Spanish port totalled 53.8 million tons in the first six months of the year, but bunker volumes showed a significant dip. Total throughput at Algeciras grew 9.6% in H1 2018 compared to the same period last year. Strong growth was seen in the liquid bulk sector, which reached 15.7 million tonnes (+16.8%), and general merchandise, which exceeded 35.1 million tons (+9.8%).
Container throughput at the Juan Carlos I and Isla Verde Exterior terminals also performed well, achieving an 8.4% year-on-year increase (2.3 million TEU) to reach 30 million tons. Imports/exports between Algeciras and Tangier Med, Morocco, increased by 6.5% year-on-year. Throughput of fresh fish and solid bulk dipped in H1 2018. Bunker supply at the port for the first six months of the year totalled 1.2 million mt, an 18.2% fall compared with the same period last year. Annual bunker sales at Algerciras have been on the slide in the last few years. In 2018 (January 2017-January 2018) bunker volumes totalled 1,753,230 mt, compared with 2,420,400 mt recorded in 2017 and 3,302,823 mt in 2016.
