Genova - The RINA Group will handle the certification of the “Costa Smeralda”, the new flagship of the Costa Crociere fleet which is under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland.
Massimo Volta, the company’s Operational Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, made the announcement this morning in Genoa, as he explained the technical challenges of classifying the first cruise ship on the international market that is 100% powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the ‘cleanest’ fossil fuel in the world. Smeralda’s launch is set for 2019, and RINA will also handle its sister ship, which should be ready in 2021. LNG is natural gas converted into liquid form to facilitate its storage and transportation, which is odourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive.
Its use for maritime transports in place of diesel fuel reduces atmospheric emissions because of the absence of sulphur dioxide emissions, a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide, and an 85% reduction in nitrogen oxides and a 95% reduction in particulates.
