Grosseto - Domnica Cemortan, the young Moldavian woman who accompanied Francesco Schettino on the command bridge when the “Costa Concordia” hit the rocks off the coast of Giglio Island, is seeking €200,000 in compensation. It was confirmed during the trial here by Valentina Quaroni, of the Madonna law firm, Ms. Cemortan’s attorney. Her client, in her view, has suffered a ‘double damage’, first as a passenger on board the Concordia, then as a victim “harrassed by the media”.

Ms. Cemortan’s attorneys are asking for a guilty sentence for the former captain and €100,000 compensation, on a provisional basis towards a total of around €200,000. Ms. Cemortan “is not present to avoid further exposure,” said attorney Quaroni. “She was aboard as a passenger and has been the victim of unprovoked media agression as well, almost to the point of being made a scapegoat. On the contrary, Ms. Cemortan showed throughout a cooperative attitude and didn’t shirk her duties. On the night of the tragedy Domnica took part in the rescue effort, putting her own life and safety in danger, risking being crushed by the ship”. She has been subjected to “irreversible mental adverse effects”, that is post-traumatic stress, due to the horrific experience she lived through.
