Gallipoli - The tanker “STI Pimlico” was severely damaged in a collision with the “Celestyal Crystal” on June 27, 2015. The cruise ship collided with the product tanker at 01.25 a.m. at the northern entrance of Dardanelles Strait in front of Gallipoli lighthouse passing the strait in North-South direction. The tanker was en route from Tuapse to Malta. The cruise ship with 853 passengers and 382 crew on board was en route from Mykonos to Istanbul. Both vessels were severely damaged, the cruise ship’s bow was crushed above the water line.
The cruise ship anchored off Gallipoli, the tanker in the Şevketiye Lapseki district. The tanker had suffered water ingress through a big breach at port side amidships, and part of the cargo of nafta spilled. The ship listed 15 degrees to port. The “Kurtarma-2”, “Kurtarma-5”, “Kurtarma-9” and the “Söndüren 7” as well as the “KEGM-2”, “KEGM-9” and the lifeboat “Tahlisiye-II” were dispatched to the site. The tug “Pimlico” was cooling the hull.The cargo was shifted to undamaged tanks. The gas inert system prevented an explosion. The collision could have been caused by an engine failure of the tanker. At 3 p.m. the evacuation of the passengers of the cruise ship started with the “Conkbayırı” with a capacity of 290 persons, joined by the hydrofoil “Alınteri-9”. At 5:10 p.m. 1,000 suitcases were brought to Gallipoli Port. The passengers were taken to Kepez and taken further to Istanbul with 20 buses. The operation was due to be completed at 8 p.m. The Customs Directorate of the Çanakkale Province Police Department was making passport and customs procedures for the evacuation of the passengers on board.
