Miami - The world’s largest cruise line said Tuesday that it will no longer let guests smoke on cabin balconies. A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Lines said the new rule, which goes into effect on Oct. 9 across the fleet, is “in response to the preferences of a majority of our guests.”

The Miami-based cruise line said the policy is consistent with most other cruise lines. Smoking inside rooms is already banned, but guests will still be allowed to smoke in designated areas on open decks, in night clubs and in certain parts of casinos and casino bars. Those who break the rule will have to pay a $250 fee.
