Genoa - Virgin group founder Richard Branson is about to venture officially into the cruise business. Following the opening of negotiations with “Italian and German shipyards” it’s becoming clear that the British magnate has chosen Fincantieri as the company he will entrust to construct the initial cruise ships. (Tom McAlpine, former Disney Cruise Line president who has a history at Royal Caribbean is being brought in to head the new company.)
According to two separate sources contacted by The MediTelegraph, Virgin Cruises is about to seal the contract with the shipyard group led by Giuseppe Bono; the actual value of the deal to construct the two cruise ships has yet to be disclosed. It would represent a significant boon for Fincantieri over Meyer Werf, its competitor; an effort achieved, according to the same sources, thanks to offering better economic terms than that of the German shipbuilder.
