Genova - The launch ceremony of “Scarlet Lady” took place at the Genova Sestri Ponente plant, the first of four cruise ships commissioned by Fincantieri from Virgin Voyages, a brand of the Virgin Group. Now the interior design phase will begin, leading to the delivery of the unit at the beginning of 2020. The event was attended by the shipowning company, among others, the President and CEO of Virgin Voyages, Tom McAlpin, while for Fincantieri Luigi Matarazzo, director of the merchant ships division and Paolo Capobianco, director of the plant. Godmother of the ceremony was Giuliana Rindone, an employee of the Sestri shipyard. “Scarlet Lady” will have about 110,000 gross tons, will be 278 meters long and 38 meters wide. The twin ship, currently under construction at the same yard, will be delivered in 2021, while the third and fourth units will take the sea respectively in 2022 and 2023.
They will all be equipped with over 1,400 cabins capable of accommodating more than 2,770 passengers on board, assisted by a crew of 1,160 people to guarantee Virgin’s distinctive style. The new units will be characterized by the original design and the particular attention to energy recovery thanks to the use of alternative technologies and cutting edge in the industry able to reduce the overall environmental impact of the ships. The units will in fact be equipped with an electricity production system of about one megawatt that uses waste heat from diesel engines.
