Greenland Wants the Arctic Terminal
Milan - The goal: to become the crossroads between the old and new routes in the Arctic between the East and West. Cost: 53 million.
Milan - A new 60,000 square metre container terminal, with a 360 metre long quay and 4,700 square metres of facilities; this is the project awarded to the noted Danish general contractor Aarsleff. The location is Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Today, this land is owned by the Danish crown, but in recent years, it has benefitted from a growing political autonomy. Aarsleff has signed a preliminary agreement with the port authority of Nuuk, the final signature should be completed within two months and the work should begin by spring 2015. The cost of the project is around 53 million Euros. Nuuk is located in a strategic position, in the southwest of the island, and is ice free for most of the year. “In past years,” a spokesperson from Aarsleff explains, “our activities in Greenland have intensified. We have worked on the Thule Air Base, as well as other port sites and other infrastructures. Existing contracts in Greenland now total around €30 million.”
