Livorno - The Port of Livorno seems on track to break a record in 2015: first quarter results show a 30% increase up to 170,000 TEUs, almost 40,000 more than in the same period last year. Those are the figures for container traffic released by the Port Authority. “Interim first quarter data proves that we’re on the right path,” commented Giuliano Gallanti, Port Authority president, “if we keep up this pace, we could get close to our best performance, recorded in 2008, that year our throughput reached almost 779,000 TEUs.”
In the last quarter of 2014 monthly container throughput surpassed that year’s average (48,122 TEUs) almost reaching 55,000 TEUs, and in 2015 growth is stabilizing at a monthly average of 56,666 TEUs per quarter.

The upward trend has been assisted by new impetus in traffic to the US and renewed interest in the Transatlantic route by important carriers, such as Zim, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, UASC and CMA-CGM. The French shipping line, in particular, already present at Livorno with four regularly scheduled services to North America (Mediterranean Caribbean; Sirius; Amerigo Express and Florida Shuttle), is going to announce a new service to Mexico and the US Gulf coast (Med Gulf) next week.
