Catanzaro - The meeting between SUL and the Medcenter company that manages the port of Gioia Tauro took place in Catanzaro, at the headquarters of the Regional Council for Transportation. Before the meeting with SUL, Medcenter and the regional authorities had a meeting with the regional transportation secretariats of CGIL, CISL, UIL and UGL. At these meetings, Medcenter announced three-year investment plans worth €45 million, increasing the capacity of the facility at the terminal.
The C.E.O., Domenico Bagalà, announced that by July volumes would increase to over 40,000 containers per week. Bagalà, who participated in the meeting between MSC’s chief, Gianluigi Aponte, and the regional governor, Mario Oliverio, which took place a few days ago in Switzerland, also announced that besides increasing the volume, he would be willing to invest in Gioia Tauro both in the reefer container repair sector and in ship maintenance. In light of the commitments made by Medcenter, which were formally recorded at the end of the meeting, the trade union federations, albeit with a few reservations from some unions, expressed an overall positive judgement.
SUL, which had declared a 24 hour strike, will take the results of today’s meeting to its workers assembly this evening where they will decide whether to go ahead with the planned 24 hour strike or to suspend the action until the Medcenter’s commitments are verified. The meetings were mediated by the Regional Councillor for Transportation, Nino De Gaetano.
