Gioia Tauro - Monday night workers at MCT, the company that manages the port in Gioia Tauro in Calabria, resumed their normal working schedules, following a strike invoked to protest the layoff of 400 workers; the local employment agency will now assist the workers in finding new jobs. The news was announced by Italy’s central government office in Reggio Calabria. “The move by Bari’s Prefect, who, on 3 March had called all parties to negotiation talks, has resulted in an initial breakthrough,” said the statement. “Already on that occasion, the Prefect had requested, through the Sul union, that workers resume work activities. Following a series of meetings, most recently that of yesterday morning with the union, the workers have decided to suspend their protest,” explained the statement, “pending a meeting convened for 13 March, at Government House, by the Prefect of Bari.”
