Rome - Fake Chinese-made goods worth over four million euros were seized in the port of Genoa on Monday. Tax police seized over 155,000 counterfeit articles as well as products containing material harmful for the consumer.
The False Step police operation uncovered a traffic of fake products from China handled by various criminal gangs, police said. The products were flagged by the port's screening process, the police said.
More than 120,000 items of counterfeit clothing and shoes were seized. Customs agency chemists found that the concentration of phthalate, a toxic substance, on seized shoes was 1,500 times the legal limit set by the EU. The seized products "would have had a sales value of more than four million euros for the criminal organizations," said the police.
